I often reflect on the school improvement work we do. What a privilege it is to work with such positive and committed school leaders. I’ve recently been involved with special providers and I once again find myself humbled by the dedication to the young people. Leaders embrace challenges and often thrive on them. Thank you.

School Improvement Work

Do you sometimes find yourself, notably in recent times, bogged down in operational aspects of school life? Of course, we need to ensure that health and safety arrangements are in place and fit for purpose. I hope you are finding a little time to come up for air. Are you able to consider the extent to which your curriculum offer is still being delivered? Also, perhaps, has this recent history made you consider the extent to which the curriculum is proving to be effective?

Keep to the moral high ground and stick to your principles. There are many advantages to working with external advisers and consultants, but remember that borrowing strength can build weakness. So, do ensure that their input aligns well with your ambition and builds leadership capacity, as opposed to eroding it. This is more about discussing the benefits of current arrangements as opposed to stating how things should be done.

A good example of this is how subject leaders or heads of departments can be empowered to monitor and subsequently evaluate the curriculum offer. How effective are current systems and processes for capturing intelligence from monitoring and then using this to help evaluate provision?

As for now, please try to take the time to enjoy the last few weeks of the term. Recharge those batteries and let’s have a great start to the new academic year.

More About BST…

The BST process enables you as school leaders to articulate your ambition for pupils in your school and identify clear processes that will bring this from vision to reality. This approach to self-evaluation places ambitions at the centre of your school thinking. Used wisely, it will complement current monitoring and evaluation work.

There are 3 versions available; Primary (including Early Years), Secondary (including Sixth Form) and All Through.

If you’re interested or would like to find out more about BST, you can find more insight here. Alternatively, you can get in touch and we would be happy to discuss BST with you.
